At 71 meters high, it is the largest Buddha in the world. Continue our journey to Mt. Emei. Mt Emei is one of the four famous Buddhist Mountains in China. From afar, the two mountains’ peaks are said to resemble the graceful curves of a pair of well-defined eyebrows, hence the name Mt Emei. Upon arrival, visit Baoguo Monastery, which is sitting 550m above sea level, built in 1615 during the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty.

Day 3 Mt. Emei Chengdu

After breakfast, visit Golden Summit, Huazang Temple and Wannian Temple. Golden Summit Huazang Temple, first constructed during the Eastern Han, stands 3077m above sea level, atop Mt. Emei, provides a platform from which to admire the opaque and mystical scenery, from the distant cloud-clad mountains to the mysteriously deep gullies below. All it takes to witness a dazzling sunrise over a sea of clouds, and perhaps even Buddha’s Light, is a little luck, the determination to wake up at 4.30am, and the patience to wait around in the cold wind until daybreak. Next, visit Wannian Temple. It is dedicated to the man on the white elephant, the Bodhisattva Puxian, who is the protector of the mountain. This statue of 8.5m high, cast in copper and bronze, and weighing an estimated 62,000 kilograms is found in Brick hall, a domed building with small stupas on it. The statue was made in 980AD. Transfer back to Chengdu after tour.

Next, we will visit The Shanxi Province Museum, located inside the Confucian Temple of Taiyuan City, is a local comprehensive museum of China. The basic exhibition is arrayed in the east wing, west wing and the main hall of the Confucian Temple. On display in the total space of 2,000 square meters are 1,000 relics, showing the ancient history, the modern history and the revolutionary history of Shanxi. Proceed to Mt. Wutai after tour ends in Taiyuan.

Day 6 Mt. Wutai

Mt Wutai is one of the four China’s well known Buddhist shrines and the only Chinese Mountain mentioned in Buddhist scriptures. The mountain is called a “cool platform” due to its cool and pleasant climates even in the summer. The construction of the temples began in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) and last 1900 years. So far only a total of 76 temples remain. Today, 47 of the temples are still in good condition and within their walls is a rich legacy of over 100000 superb scriptures and paintings, along with a great quantity of Buddhist cultural relics. Firstly, we will visit Dailuo Peak (Exclude cable car ride). Next, visit the must-see temple, Xiantong Temple. According to historical records, the Xiantong Temple is the oldest of its kind on Wutai Mountain and is also one of the first Buddhist temples ever constructed in China. In front of the temple stands a tall wooden bell tower with a huge 5000-kilogramme bronze bell cast during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is the largest bell on the mountain. The next visit is to Bodhisattva Summit Temple. A set of 108 stone steps leads to a Qing-dynasty memorial archway supported by four pillars to Zhenrong Temple, which is also called Pusading (Bodhisattva Summit) Temple, on Lingiu Peak behind Xiantong. Budhisattva Summit Temple actually looks like a miniature version of the Potala Palace in Lhasa; therefore it also called Lama Palace. We will also visit Tayuan Temple, Wanfo Temple, Puhua Temple and Shuxiang Temple.

Day 7 Mt. Wutai Datong

After breakfast, drive to Datong and visit the 500-year-old Yungang Grottoes in west Datong. It is the largest cluster of grottoes in China and a world-famous treasure house of art. Next, visit XuanKong Temple (Hanging Monastery), located south of Datong. One of the five sacred Taoist Mountains, Shanxi’s Hengshan is often referred to as Beiyue to distinguish it from Nanyue, the Hengshan of Hunan. The most dramatic of the Eighteen Scenes of Hengshan is the Xuankong Temple, suspended precariously under an overhanging precipice. Some of the 40 halls in this temple are held up by a single support-pillar.
